Community+Gardens is an app with an accompanying print piece that encourages local communities to become involved in gardening activities with the community. The app aims to be a utility for community garden admins, gardeners and members of the local community to collaborate on needs, attend events, and work together towards goals of food autonomy. The print piece serves as a city guide for finding community gardens in San Diego and an information piece on the benefits of community gardens.
The constraints I had to work inside of for this project involved having to begin the design with the print guide and afterwards building the design of the app based on the outcome of the print guide.
For the print element, a twist fold design was adopted to create a fun and memorable tactile experience. I set out to create something unique and attention grabbing for the print guide and go for a minimalist utalitarian design.
Translation of the print guide to a mobile application resulted in an app that not only shares locations for local community gardens but also serves as a social tool for community gardeners across the region.
