Summary
Gardening Together
Community+Gardens is an app with a print component that encourages local communities to become involved in gardening activities with the community. The app aims to be a utility for community garden admins, gardeners and members of the local community to come collaborate on needs, attend events, and work together towards goals of food autonomy.
Process
Print to App
The challenge of the project included creating a guide centered around a passion into a print format, & design an application that serves as a companion piece to the passion guide.

The print component was first conceived in the project and later adapted into the application. The fonts chosen for this project include Freitag, chosen for its vivacious character that evokes  psychadelia and elements of Art Nouveau lushness. Both versions, display and roman are used throughout the project as the main fonts. Lato was chosen for the body-copy throughout for its legibility and ease of translation for app use. Botanika mono was chosen for tags and small text, while Acumin pro condensed was applied to quotes and miscellaneous text.

Solution
Expanding Knowledge
A twist fold design was adopted to create a fun and memorable experience with the print-out. This design presented a layout challenge as it required including at minimum 20 locations for community gardens throughout San Diego along with a map marking their locations.

The middle section of the fold serves as a perfect surprise and position for the map of San Diego. This use of the twist fold, also allowed for use of the back portion of the foldout to create a fun and educating portion to the guide.

Solution
Connecting Community
Translation of the print guide to a mobile application resulted in an app that not only shares locations for local community gardens but also serves as a social tool for community gardeners across the region.

The Community+Gardens app allows users to easily discover nearby community gardens, join local community gardens and manage tasks with fellow members, connect with other members, and stay up-to-date on events and activities in their region.
