ROC-AN-ROL is a a multi-spread document that explores the relationship between two texts; a macro and micro text. These texts are related but not directly in reference to one another, through the visual solution the texts should be linked. For the subject of this project the text from Love and Rage by Kelley Trato was used as the macro text, while for the micro text the Mexican National Anthem was used. The connection found between these texts was the concept of music and Mexican identity.
Experimental methods of zine construction were referenced along with contemporary magazine design, serving as a symbolic reference to the tension between the subjects of both texts. A total of 49 safety pins bind together the project.
The typography chosen references the grunge and punk era of the 90s playing against the traditional geometric forms of the Brother 1816 typeface, meanwhile Nitti Typewriter serves as the typeface of choice for the micro text and using its visual form as a reference to governmental presence.
Magenta was the colour of choice as it is recognizable as one of the colours most prominent in Mexican pop art, playing as a reference to national identity, nostalgia and DIY.
