Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department at SDSU began the process to roll out a few initiatives to improve the safety culture in labs on campus. The first of these initiatives was a designation for an individual who goes above and beyond a "safety champion" and award them a badge or certificate. The second initiative was to award the lab that completes all the necessary setup in their online system (BioRAFT), a similar badge/certificate that they can display.
For this, EHS tasked us to develop a name for both of these initiatives, create two logos, and deliver application concepts. This project was part of a two-week classroom project where classmates worked alone or in teams to develop different solutions and present each to the client.
Taking into consideration the role of EHS, and the purpose of the initiatives, it was clear that these logos should be part of the same design system. Therefore, the names SaFeLab and SaFePaL which each part of the names being also acronyms of the values of EHS.
An additional challenge to this design was that the colour palette chosen had to be in alignment with the San Diego State University brand colours.
The fonts chosen for the logo were Futura and Parity sans mono. Futura was chosen as a nod to vintage periodic table designs and for it's clean and sharp forms that are clear to read, and evoke intelligence & diligence. Parity sans was chosen to bring in a fun and tech-forward element to the logo's secondary typography. Parity sans' construction also allows for secondary material to continue carrying out the uppercase and lowercase pattern of the elements of the periodic table.
The solution presented here was developed in collaboration with my classmate
Maricela Acosta Contreras, this was the winning solution that the client decided to
adopt.
